David Last (Staubgold, Foundsound)
David Last is a musician and visual artist living in Brooklyn New York. Solo, or as half of the dancefloor duo Pocket Pet (with Segeke from Osaka), he's been rocking international crowds. David's tracks often combine dancefloor energy with the deeper-leaning funk of dancehall, dub, latin music and hip hop. Too simple to call it dancefloor dub, or field funk, or maximal tech(no!)... it's purely his own style, instantly recognizable. David has become known for his soundcraft and deeply funky rhythmic sense. David's tracks are currently released in a variety of contexts with labels like Staubgold (Berlin), Goosehound (NYC), and Unfoundsound (Philly). He has contributed remixes to quality indies such as Audio.NL (Rotterdam) and The Social Registry (NYC). His organic reggae influenced electronic music releases for The Agriculture and Staubgold have garnered high praise from tough to please critics such as Pitchfork, and gained a strong cult following in Europe, the States and Japan. Projects further afield of dance music have included the performance of a commissioned soundtrack for a cavern in Japan, and a video/music installation in Amsterdam. He is currently creating the musical score for an IMAX film about atoms and molecules. In 1996 in NYC he began making books with the art books collective Booklyn, while playing drums and electronics with bands and at a pirate radio station on the lower east side. Since the mid 90s, his visual artwork was sold to and shown by MOMA and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and in 2004 he curated an international audio video compilation for Lincoln Center. Since then he's continued to push the boundaries between sound and vision, while retaining a sense of humor. He also works as a designer and illustrator. |
